Can someone help me with Ultralight Airplane information?

Okay, so I want to build an Ultralight airplane. I was seriously considering the Afford-A-Plane (www.affordaplane.com) and have a few questions.

1. About how much would one of these cost to build?
2. Do I need a license to fly one?
3. What do I need to do as far as the FAA is concerned?
4. Do I need to take off from an airport runway or can I just use a neighbor's farm?

I'm 18 years old and have flown a Cessna one time with one of my dad's friends who is a pilot. Other than that, I have zero flight training and obviously no pilot's license. I do plan on taking flight lessons before I fly it (if I do decide to actually build it).

Looks like a nice little airplane to fly in mild weather. To answer your questions...

1. Expect to spend from $2500 to $5000 (US) on parts and materials. A big part of your cost will be a reliable engine and good quality propeller. The nice thing about building your own is you don't have to buy everything all at once. You can build one piece at a time and just buy what you need for the next weekend's project You can buy materials from aviation vendors like Wicks Aircraft Supply or Aircraft Spruce.

2. As long as you build the aircraft in acordance with FAR Part 103, you won't need a license or medical certificate to fly it.

3. The FAA does not register or monitor ultralight aircraft. Again, research FAR Part 103.

4. As long as you don't interfere with other airplane traffic, you can fly an ultralight from any convenient farm strip.

Even though a pilot's license is not required, I would strongly recommend you get some flight training before you try to fly this thing. Takeoff and Landing with a conventional (tailwheel) landing gear is a lot different than with a tricycle gear, and it's best to have some experience in that type of aircraft.

Good Luck!

Good Free Ultralight aircraft DIY Plans?

Are there any good free DIY plans for an ultralight airplane? Ive been looking around, but constantly get dead ends with people just ranting about free plans they have..

Im looking for a single seater, with a relatively small size to it.. enough that a rotax 582 wouldnt have a problem with it, and one that wont use too much of my materials

Mylar balloon? Works great if you're 6. Oh wait...

I know nothing about free plans, but there is something to be said for the phrase "you get what you pay for." If you want to build an ultralight I'd go with a kit. It will cost a few more bucks up front, but in the long run you'll save money (won't have to do too many things twice) and have a better end result.

If you really want to save some money buy something that is completely built and has been flown. You'll know exactly what you're getting and while it's more money up front this will be your least expensive way to go.
