Marcia flew her ultralight plane to a nearby town against a head wind of 15 km/h in 2 h 20 min. The return trip under the same wind conditions took 1 h 24 min. Find the planes airspeed and the distance to the nearby town. This is very important, "identify 2 variables and set up two equations"
Let plane's airspeed be v (km per hour).
Let distance to town be d (km)
1 hr 24 min = 84/60 hr
2 hr 20 min = 140/60 hr.
Distance = speed x time, in both directions.
d = (v+15) x 84/60 flying with wind
d = (v-15) x 140/60 flying against wind.
Solve these for v and d.
(v-15) x 140 = (v+15) x 84
140v - 2100 = 84v + 1260
56v = 3360
v = 60.
Find d. d = 75 x 84/60 = 105.
distance = 105 km. airspeed = 60 km/hr
