How does a Horizontal Situation Indicator work?

I have been searching for the correct answer but I already know that its a heading indicator with a VOR / ILS all I want to know is that how does it actually work like on the inside. Online searches say what the instrument is and what each item on the instrument does like heading knob and course knob.

Does the HSI work just like a heading indicator like (Mechanical Wise)?
If so then how does the VOR / ILS work (Mechanical Wise) thats with the HSI ?

That's what I want to know. Anyone would like to shed some light on this I would be greatly appreciated thanks -Bruce-

The compass is inaccurate when accelerating or turning. Thus, a directional gyroscope was developed to give accurate directional info all the time. Slaving the DG (or heading indicator) to a flux sensor counters precession, so the DG does not drift over time.

The HSI is superceeding the DG. Yes, most HSI's have an internal DG, like a heading indicator, but most are slaved to a flux sensor so that you do not have to readjust it every 15 minutes or so. Some newer ones are strictly electronic, and use acceleratometers instead of the DG.

The VOR/ILS is strictly electronic, even old ones. The HSI has the display from these integrated. Also, the VOR needles always go the right way, so you don't have to read them backwards on the back course ("from" indicator). Thus, basically the same as the older seperate VOR/ILS.
