You are a pilot in WWII which aircraft would you want to have served in?

depends on when and what theater.

in the pacific early on, definitely the zero, but later on it was definitely outclassed and outflown by the hellcat

european theater probably saw better aircraft though since the pacific ones had to be able to take off from a carrier in general.

early on, the me109 was probably better than the spitfire or hurricane, mostly because it was packing a 20mm cannon in addition to machine guns. as such it was still formidable towards the end of the war. later on, i would probably go with the me262 - there were operational difficulties as it was a new technology, ate up fuel, was very vulnerable at takeoff, etc. the mustang was much more reliable and maneuverable, but if it were one-on-one and all other things being equal, I'd much rather be in a jet.

The most accomplished ace of world war II?

Who is the most successful fighter pilot of WWII. In which theater, and in what aircraft did he fight. How many enemy planes shot down?

Erich Hartmann - no question

352 victories, never lost a wingman, flew the entire range of German Aircraft (including the ME-262) and crash landed 16 times. All this by the age of 24!

If that were not enough - Hartmann spent 10 years in a Russian Prison Camp and rebuilt the German Air Force in the 1950's.

Others to consider:
Ivan Kozhedub - Russian
Tetsuzo Iwamoto - Japanese
Hiroyoshi Nishizawa - Japanese
Gerhard Barkhorn - Germany
Hans-Ulrich Rudel - Germany - while not really a "fighter" pilot he is worth mentioning as Germany made a award just for him and advised the US on designing the best ground attack aircraft ever (A-10 Warthog)
