What identification information is transmitted by an aircraft transponder?

If it's the tail number, how is the transponder info changed if it sold to someone in another country, requiring new registration?

Just to clarify this - the transponder does NOT transmit the tail number (registration). In many countries the registration consists of letters and/or numbers, and there is no capability to transmit letters.

A flight is assigned a 'squawk' code, which is a 4-digit number (using only the digits 0-7) and this is the only ID info which is transmitted. The 'squawk' may change during the flight, as the aircraft passes from one control authority to another.

The additional information passed on by the transponder (such as altitude etc) is linked to the allocated squawk code. Also, the flight number may also be shown. For example, Singapore AIrlines flight from Manchester UK to S'pore would show SG0327 (I think that is the correct number!).

There are also various standard squawk codes in use, for example in some countries, a Skydiving Aircraft would use 0033, provided that it has not been allocated any other specific code by ATC.
