What's the deal with infinite baffle subwoofers - please read the whole question?

I'm setting up a rather elaborate, expensive home theater sound system. In my research I see that some of the more elaborate high end systems are using infinite baffle subwoofers. What's the advantage to this as opposed to a well designed vented or sealed type of enclosure?

The best quality bass comes from open baffle (dipole) bass. It's the most natural and musical sounding bass. Second best is infinite baffle. Infinite baffle is essentially a sealed box where the box is very very large, so large that the suspension of the driver Cms is by far the dominate factor in the total suspension. The resonance of the system Fc is thus very nearly the same as the resonance of the driver Fs. The driving force requirement from the coil is thus less than a small sealed box or a small ported box where the air compliance contributes to the system suspension. Lower current in the coils, less thermal swings and less impedance swings thus lower distortion.

You need a lot of space for IB like an extra room or the attic to act as the very large box. Ideally the back of the cone would open to the outdoors so it really is infinite but as long as the suspension of the air mass is insignificant relative to the driver suspension that's good enough.

If you have the space for infinite baffle ideally you will also have the space to use multiple drivers. All woofers are limited by the air volume displacement. People always look for more power but in reality this is irrelevant. As long as you have the power to fully utilize the drivers displacement capability additional power is useless. Because infinite baffle woofers don't have the additional stiffness of the air mass suspension they can typically reach full displacement with very little power. If you can use two drivers or four or more drivers you can increase the volume displacement capability. The more the better! If you could find space for six or eight 15" drivers, that's a lot of volume displacement. You can connect them in series parallel and drive them with a single amplifier because each woofer requires very little power.
