I've made a bench power supply that puts out 12Vdc, 5Vdc and 3.3Vdc. How can I now make it variable ?


I've tried a potentiometer but I can not get it to work. I'm not sure if I'm hooking it up correctly.

I gotta go with Eugene on this one, best way is to add a variable voltage regulator from one of the outputs and you can then change the output voltage. If you just use a pot, then you will have to keep checking the output voltage (under load) to make sure you haven't loaded your power supply.
The circutry isn't too difficulty to build, you could easily make one fit on a 2" square brassboard (if you can solder).

And you mentioned you weren't sure if you hooked the pot up correctly, just go from center contact to either side contact (that works like 99.9%) if you go to both sides, you turn your pot into a fixed resistor. Also, you might want to make sure it has a linear taper (The resistance changes the same amount per revolution), to make 'dialing in' your voltages easier.

DIY bench power supply with voltage regulator.



Computer doesnt boot. Do I have a bad motherboard or CPU? How can I tell?


I have only the power supply, CPU and motherboard connected. It is on the bench not touching the case. When I turn it on...the power supply fan starts...then stops for 4 seconds...then starts again and stays on. I do not hear a POST beep. I have tried a different power supply with exactly the same results. Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with Intel E6750 processor both 2 months old.
I have unplugged everything except the power supply, CPU and motherboard. I should be getting a POST error beep, but I get no sound when the computer starts.
The power LED on my box only has one color. It stays green when the power is to the system. It turns off during the 4 second "pause." My bigest question is what that pause means...

Only way I know is discovery by elimination. Also the CPUs can generally withstand much more than a motherboard can. Usually failure is caused by damage from heat, and the motherboard is the the most susceptible and first to go.

You have already eliminated the power supply. It has to be either the mb or cpu. I vote for cpu.

Disregard the first answerer, because he assumes you have a hard drive connected. You said you only have mb, cpu, and ps connected. I assume you also have at least one memory stick in. As the 2nd answerer stated, that could be bad, but is easily checked by inserting a different memory stick. Before doing that, however, make sure that the memory stick is inserted in the first slot (consult your mb diagram to see which is the #1 slot - it may be labeled). I also assume that you have already tried reseting your CMOS jumper, and that the jumper is not in the shorted position (again consult your diagram). That being said, I have also encountered bad Gigabyte motherboards that were almost new, and new.

You said will not boot. I assume you mean that you have it hooked to a monitor, and nothing will show on the monitor. It should show something, even without a hard drive.
