How important is it to you that both June and July '09 are ranked as 2nd warmest in history, respectively?

May 09 - 3rd warmest May from historical records
June 09 - 2nd warmest June from historical records
July 09 - 2nd warmest July from historical records

Didier/Randall/Jose - I could care less about your local weather.

Through the first 7 months of the year, the average global temperature anomaly (according to GISS) is 0.53°C. That puts it about 5th-hottest year if it continues this average. However, the last 3 months have been above the average because of the current El Nino. So likely the rest of the year will average somewhere around the current 0.6°C anomaly, and the year will end up with an average anomaly around 0.57°C.

It won't be as hot as 2005, but it could very well be the 2nd-hottest year on record (and may break the NOAA NCDC record). This during a time when the deniers inconceivably continue to argue the planet is cooling.

It's important to me just because once the near-record 2009 temperature is in the books, the deniers will no longer be able to cherrypick statistically insignificant 'cooling trends'. The only reason they can do it now is because 2008 was a relatively cool year. Once the endpoint is once again a hot year, the cherrypicking 'cooling trend' arguments will be destroyed. Deniers will have to resort to either talking about local weather (Randall style) or finding even shorter 'cooling trends', like 3 months long instead of 3 years!

*edit* Randall would benefit from examining the figure provided by bucket.
