It may recieve from a max of about 25 miles, but it will only transmit 8-12 miles max. Remember, hand held units are only about 5 watts power where a fixed unit may be 25 watts. Also vhf is " line of sight", meaning that it will transmit about as far as the horizon from the antenna tip.
