CISCO Router 3640--IOS problem?

Hi every body,

Hope you can help me out from this weird problem. I would like to install a new IOS on my CISCO 3640 router, but the problem I am facing, the router is not get into the rommonitor or boot from nvram or flash or any where i can write some command. Whenever I switched ON the router, it gives me the following message and keeps sending it......

System Bootstrap, Version 11.1(20)AA2, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
oC3600 processor with 65536 Kbytes of main memory
Main memory is configured to 64 bit mode with parity disabled

open: file "n" not found
open(): Open Error = -1
loadprog: error - on file open
boot: cannot load "flash:n":

Is there any way, so that I can get into router's rommonitor and install the new IOS.

Please HELP ME.

I had a similar problem when I was new to Cisco and had bought a 3640 router off of eBay. My router had the similar "flash:n" in the flash file.

What has happened is probably not a corrupt flash stick or file. Plain and simple the IOS flash file just does not exist. When someone was reloading the flash on the router they probably had hit "n" in the name for "no" or something along that line.

Anyway, since you do not have an IOS you will have to reload your IOS .bin file through the rommon. To get to rommon you will have to hit the break key, sometimes used during password recovery, during start up. I have included a URL in the source from Cisco that includes the correct break key sequence depending on what type of terminal program you are using to connect to the console port. You hit your appropriate key sequence 5 - 10 seconds after a power cycle / cold start-up.

After hitting the key it should stop the router from its normal loading process and put you in something that looks like:

rommon1>

It might say "rommon2>" and that is OK. At this point you will want to follow the directions from the second URL I have listed in the source at the bottom. In order to put the IOS back on from rommon you will have to load it through xmodem through a series of commands. In the URL provided from Cisco you will want to follow the commands listed for the 3600 routers.

Cisco is using windows hyper-terminal for loading to rommon.
IF you are unfamiliar with sending files via Hyper-terminal you will want to look over the example figures they have in the 1600 router (on the same URL). They omitted these figures in the 3600 router instructions.

I used these same instructions to get my router up and running. One thing to note... use a small IOS just to get the router up and running. Once it is running you can put what ever file you want via TFTP. A full featured 32MB IOS file will take all year to transfer via Xmodem!!!

I hope this helps and I wish you good luck.
