Are helicopters required to be on a radio frequency in flight or landing on a private helipad?

Are Lifeflight helicopters required to advise any tower or center that they are taking off from a private helipad and give thier destination or does it show up on radar from their transponder? I know commerical aircraft can be tracked can helicopters?

They are not required to communicate on any specific frequency unless they are coming into or leaving controlled airspace. In the case of life-flight they are likely in contact with the hospital at all times.
Any helicopter equipted for life-flight operations will have a transponder to identify them on radar. Likely at least a mode C and D transponder that provides both altitude and tail number.
